TOM MCHUGH'S BOTTLES
It will be a case of Christmas coming late at Tuam Golf Club this Saturday when Tom McHugh finally dispenses with the many bottles, tins of roses, cans of coke and USA biscuits he has been storing since the beginning of December. Yes, it's the Saturday Club Christmas bottles competition and all members are expected to participate. Tom will be buying a round for the house but he doesn't want this publicised.

Members are reminded that the Christmas bottles outing will take place this coming Saturday, February 6. Happy Xmas all!!
SYMPATHY EXTENDED
The club extends sympathy to the wife and family of Richie Molloy who died last week and was buried at the weekend. Richie was a popular member of the club and he will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Una who is also a prominent member of Tuam Golf Club along with daughters Corinne and Aoife and son Richard. He was buried at Cummer Cemetery on Sunday afternoon last following Mass at St. Coleman's Church, Corofin.
NO GOLF ON SUNDAY
Unfortunately there was no golf on Sunday (January 31) because of the overnight frost but the 10 hole competition continues this week. It is €5 entry with a €2 re-entry. Please support. Hopefully things will get back to normal after this week. Put out the Child of Prague or something that will keep both rain and frost away.
PRO SHOP SALE
Our Professional, Richard Creamer, has a sale on at the moment and it includes both golf clubs and golf gear. He is very competitive on all of the leading brands so check out his many offers that he has in store.
**2009 BAR VOUCHERS**
John & Susie Wall have extended the redemption date of the 2009 vouchers due to the very bad spell of weather, vouchers will be valid up to and including Friday 12th February 2010
10 HOLE COMPETITION
With a near two month lay off from golf, it's time to get your competitive edge sharpened.
A gents 10-Hole competition will commence this Monday and continue for the remainder of January and throughout February. It costs €5 with a re-entry of €2 with one card to count each week. There will be prizes at the end of each week.
Members are asked to support this event and will be the lead up to the Captains' Drive In which takes place in the middle of March.
SATURDAY CLUB CHRISTMAS BOTTLES
Lads, it's getting serious now. The frost scuppered any chance of golf on Saturday but the good news is that the forecast for the remainder of the week is fairly okay in that it will be milder than of late.
Tom McHugh is adamant that the Christmas bottles will be played for this coming Saturday and Austin Lydon has agreed to give us a verse of Jingle Bells. It's not that he will have to collect any of the main prizes or anything like that!
YIPEE! COURSE REOPENS
The course reopened last Wednesday and hopefully will remain open for the remainder of 2010. Every precaution had to be taken to ensure that the course was ready for play and it is in great shape despite the awful weather we got over the past couple of months. So get out there and enjoy your golf.
CLUBHOUSE RENOVATIONS
As a result of the flooding of the clubhouse over the Christmas period, extensive renovations are taking place to both the bar area, downstairs and the pro shop. We would ask members to exercise patience while these works are taking place. it is hoped to have the works completed in full by the end of February. Again, the committee would like to thank members for their support during this difficult time.
MEMBERSHIP PAYMENT OPTIONS
The Committee of Tuam Golf Club would ask members to please pay their annual supscription as soon as possible. Those members who pay their subs in full before the end of January will receive two free green fees.
There is also a direct debit option available. This option has now been extended to June meaning that decuctions will be made at the end of every month from January to June.
Any member who introduces a new member to Tuam Golf Club during the course of 2010 will receive four free green fees.
COURSE REOPENING
It is unlikely that the course will reopen this weekend but the indications are that it may be playable sometime next week . . . again, weather permitting. The course staff are endeavouring to bring the course to a situation that it can be opened for golf. The hope is that the weekend competion can resume on January 24. The Christmas bottles outing for the Saturday Club will take place on January 23. There is wide speculation that Tom McHugh (Saturday Club Captain) will dress up in a Santa Claus costume for the presentation of prizes but that is just rumour at this stage.
CONNACHT BRANCH ADVISE CAUTION BEFORE REOPENING
THE CONNACHT BRANCH GUI HAS CIRCULARISED THIS ADVICE IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE BIG FREEZE AND THEY ADVISE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN IT COMES TO OPENING THE COURSE FOR PLAY
Over the last three weeks much of the county has been subject to extreme weather conditions. Extended periods of snow cover and low temperatures are now causing real concern for greenkeepers. Such extreme conditions are potentially damaging to fine turf and the main aim is to limit the level of damage as we move towards the start of the 2010 playing season. If the greens are covered in new snow the main concern would be the development of the disease snow mould (caused by the pathogen Michrodochium nivale the same one that causes fusarium patch disease). If a preventative fungicide was applied beforehand this is unlikely. However, untreated greens or those with active Fusarium patch before the snowfall may develop snow mould as the turf is insulated under the snow. If a disease attack becomes apparent after the thaw then a curative fungicide application will be required. Products containing the active ingredients iprodione applied at 20 l/ha or chlorothalonil at 30 l/ha should be applied for best control. Although frustrating, our best advice in the majority of cases is to let nature take its course and wait for a thaw and then give time for recovery. Trying to remove a solid cover of ice is not recommended for the following reasons: 1. In most cases it is impractical. 2. It is likely to cause further collateral damage to the greens surface (and possibly the surrounds if machinery is used). 3. The removal process can physically damage the turf cover especially when the grass is stuck into the ice. 4. It may actually expose the grass plants to even lower temperatures with the ice and snow cover acting as insulation. In most cases the sensible approach is to do nothing and wait for a thaw. However, where deposits are deep, some careful chipping and removal by hand (as long as the work does not penetrate the turf canopy) may accelerate the ice removal process once the thaw eventually sets in. When milder weather returns and the thaw begins then efforts should be made to accelerate the ice melt. To achieve this, spreading a dark sand or material such as charcoal onto the surface can help to absorb heat and literally melt the ice. Once the ice starts to melt, it is important to then remove any meltwater by pumping or by squeegee to take it away from the turf surface without causing any damage to the underlying turf. As this is fairly unchartered territory we are unsure of the potential damage that may be caused. The extent of any damage will depend on each individual circumstance and, in particular, the sward composition of the greens. Annual meadow grass (Poa annua) dominated surfaces are particularly likely to suffer to a greater degree compared with bent and fescue surfaces which have been shown to survive under ice for 70 days in the US. Once the ice has been removed, it will be important to provide some rest to the greens to allow the turf to overcome the period of stress and recover from any damage that may have occurred. Do not be tempted to open the surfaces for play too quickly.
Happy New Year to all members, visitors and staff.

**COURSE CLOSED DUE TO FROST**

WINTER TAKES ITS TOLL ON CLUBHOUSE
The adverse weather conditions resulted in burst pipes and flooding in the clubhouse. Members are asked for their patience at this difficult time while the problem is being resolved. Hopefully everything will get back to normal as soon as possible. Many thanks to those who have come to the assistance of the club over the past few days.

A BIT OF WISHFUL THINKING
Maybe it was a little on the nieve side to think that the Saturday Club bottles competition could take place on Saturday. But, hey, we live in hope. When the outing does take place, we will have to check the best before dates on the drink!! The Captain, Tom McHugh, believes we will be playing golf this coming Saturday. But then, Tom is an eternal optimist. Anyway, we can only wait and see . . . and hope. We will have to retrain some of you in the art of swinging a golf club.

John C Davin and Michael Ryder will be leading the charge. Incoming Lady Captain, Pauline Ryan is a dab hand in the garden and she too will be volunteering her services. It is an effort to enhance the clubhouse and surrounding area so it would be much appreciated if as many as possible could lend a hand. DAVE BURKE WINS PRESIDENT'S PRIZE IN TUAM
The cream certainly came to the top when seven handicapper Dave Burke powered to victory in John Ger Davin’s President’s Prize on Sunday. The competition, which was played in stableford format, attracted a huge entry and the weather was certainly very favourable.
The course was set up long but it was fantastic to see two of the new greens in play at the nineth and 12th. It was not surprising that the scoring matched the difficulty of the course and after the conclusion of the 18 holes John Mahon was the leader in the clubhouse with 39 points.
The previous day John C Fahy had secured 38 points with the wily campaigner Jarlath Crisham just a shot further back along along with the eventual winner and young Matthew Fahy. Behind them on 36 points were Noel Murphy, Brian McDonagh, Paul Leufer and Peter J. Ryan.
But in the end it was Dave Burke who reigned supreme with 22 points on the third nine to take John Ger Davin’s prize and he had two points to spare over Jarlath Crisham while Oliver McDonagh had the best gross.
It was a great night as a large crowd turned out for the presentation of prizes with club Captain Mick O’Gara complimenting John Ger on a great year in office so far and spoke about the valuable contribution he makes to the committee.
