Tuam golfers pay tribute to memory of special member.
It will be something of an emotional occasion when past members of a retired golfing group will congregate for a special event.
The Tuam Golf Club GOATS (retired members) will celebrate 30 years in existence on this coming Tuesday, July 15 when they will play for the Jackie McElroy Cup.
Jackie McElroy was a long-standing member of Tuam Golf Club and was involved in many teams that represented the club. His unexpected passing more than 20 years ago came as a shock tov both family and club members.
The event will be attended by members of the late Jackie McElroy’s family including Detective Sergeant John McElroy, Pat McElroy, Sergeant Mary McElroy, Sergeant Josephine McElroy, Jimmy McElroy and Eamon McElroy.
Organiser and Captain of the Goats, PJ Murphy, said that it would be a special occasion given that not alone was it the 30th anniversary of the event but it would also mark the contribution that the McElroy family have given to Tuam Golf Club.
“There is no doubt that Jackie McElroy has left a lasting legacy in Tuam Golf Club and we are proud to honour his memory.
“Not alone did he represent the club at various levels, but he was an inspiration for up and coming golfers who he encouraged at every available opportunity.
“Many of the more mature members of Tuam Golf Club will remember him for his great wit and camaraderie that he expressed at all times,” added PJ Murphy, who is from Turloughmore and son of the former Galway Hurling Board legend Phelim Murphy.
The Jackie McElroy Cup will be presented to the winner of the 18 hole competition that will be played by the senior members of Tuam Golf Club on Tuesday next with the presentation of prizes taking place at 2pm.
It is hoped that many past captains of the GOATS will be in attendance for the outing and the social celebrations afterwards.
In recent years, the past captains have included Jerry Desmond, Paul Keating, Michael Casserly, Martin Connor, John Daly, Richard Broderick, Pat Casey, Frank Clancy and Rae Gilmore.
Back in the day, the likes of PJ Grealish, Brendan Gilligan, Padraic Fitzmaurice, Joe Rushe, Michael Murray, Michael Moroney, Miko Parsons and Pat Quinn all held office.
Outgoing Captain PJ Murphy is anxious that past and present members of the retired golfing contingent attend the event and the celebrations afterwards.
