Junior Golf:
The Junior golfers completed their Summer programme last Wednesday with 14 teams of 3 taking to the fairways watched by as many proud parents.
The programme did not begin until 22July due to restrictions and lock down brought about by Covid 19, from that date till last Wednesday the 26th August the Juniors had a scramble every Wednesday and tuition every Saturday (bar the August weekend bank holiday) from Professional Thomas Niland. The progress of the juniors could be seen from week to week with last weeks scrambles seeing several birdies 2 eagles and an Albatross.
When the Programme began on 22nd of July the committee were unsure how many would turn up. To their delight and surprise there were 10 teams of 3. All arrived for 9.15 and our Captain Gerry Cunningham maned the door and only let in one child and one parent for registration. This was to see to social distancing which was vital for the success of the whole programme. As each team were put in place they were sent out with an adult who marked their card. This exercise was tedious and slow, one parent Cathy Burke saw the dilemma and offered to set up a WhatsApp group. This was done and thanks to her technological expertise and organizational skills The whole programme became childs play. Cathy is now the golf parent on the committee. Parents let Cathy know the day before the scramble who is coming with ‘thumbs up’ or who is not coming with ‘thumbs down’ and so teams can be organized and put in place the day before.
There was great cooperation from club members and seeing so many young people (up to 40) turn up with their parents twice weekly was a great boost for our club. Credit must be given to our Captains Gerry Cunningham and Ann Higgins who put in place Junior Conveners, Ray Gilmore and Marie Coen who have given more than 100 percent to their role and ably assisted by their committee Gerry Fahy, Agnes Curley and golf Parent Cathy Burke. Dolly Cambell, Club Honsecretary, Francis Canavan chairperson of the club parent committee and Brian Flesk treasurer with the many many numerous volunteers needed each week deserve great credit for their twice weekly help. To name you all would be impossible. Our P.R.O. AnnTreacy , goes way beyond the call of duty in keeping members up to date with the Juniors weekly scramble results as well as Members results. Her ability to surprise us with news items and interesting views of the course makes the golf news each week all the more interesting.
To the 60 plus parents who sent ‘thank you’ messages, your appreciation has been taken on board and with you backing the Tuam Junior golf programme we can only go from strength to strength.Catherine Keenan’s art masterpiece expressing her gratitude will later on get a prominent place in the clubhouse and hopefully appear in our local papers.
It was good to see our Connaught officials, Damian Coyne, Captain of the Senior Interprovincial Team, supporting us and Jacqui Mc.Grath, chair of Tournament Connaught I.L.G.U. The Captains, Junior Conveners and committee with Pro.Thomas Niland are looking forward to having a few under 13 teams for next years Connaught competitions.
